OUR STORY

From a Seed of Passion to a Forest of Fungi

At the heart of Soma Mushrooms is Raj Upadhyay, a true mushroom enthusiast whose journey began in 2021. What started as a deep fascination with mycology grew into an obsession—countless hours of training, learning, and experimenting with these incredible organisms. He understood that mushrooms were more than just food; they were a bridge between nature and human wellness.

But every great vision needs a partner to bring it to life. In January 2024, Raj joined forces with his co-founder, Shristi Rajbhandari, the soul of Soma. Together, they turned a passionate dream into a tangible reality. From production and sales to marketing and design, Raj and Shristi pour their hearts into every facet of Soma, building a brand they are proud to call their own.

Our Roots: A Commitment to Nepal and Nature

We are more than a mushroom farm; we are a part of the Kathmandu community. Based in our GMP-certified facility in Dakshinkali, we are proud to provide job opportunities for local people, creating a skilled team that shares our vision.

Our commitment to the earth is in everything we do. We locally source all our raw materials, including hardwood, giving a new purpose to wood waste that would otherwise be discarded. We sustainably use it to create a life-giving medium for our mushrooms.

But our cycle of sustainability doesn't end there. We believe in a philosophy of "from the earth, back to the earth." Every spent mushroom block is transformed into the highest quality, nutrient-rich fertilizer, perfect for gardens and farms. This is a 100% organic, closed-loop system. We are proud to say that from start to finish, we do not use any chemicals or pesticides.
